I worked as a writer for a Japanese publishing company at the end of last year and the book was published last week, so they sent me a copy all the way to London. (Thank you very much!)
イギリスの文化の一部とも思われる「花の妖精」をベースに、その魅力や世界について書かれた本です。ロンドンチームはこの本の中の約２０ページほどを受け持ちました。「花の妖精」の絵を生涯に渡って書き続けたシシリー・メアリー・バーカーや、ロンドンのフラワーマーケット、そしてペンギンブックスに取材に行ったりなどなど、盛り沢山の内容です。So君に、Sai君という写真家の二人と、毎日寒くて日が短い冬のイギリスで、汗だくになりながら取材しましたので、書店でお手に取ってご覧頂けたら幸いです。
This book is about the Flower Fairies which are said to be a part of British culture. I wrote about 20 pages of this book including pieces about Cicely Mary Barker who drew the flower fairies her entire life, Columbia flower market, Kew gardens, Penguin books in London and so on. It was quite hard for me to visit so many places in the cold and short sunlights of winter in England with the two photographers called So and Sai, so it would be nice if you could have a look at the book in the shop.

This beautiful Sussex is now to be a target of fracking. Imagine the water here in poisons. I wanna keep this sustainable beauty instead of unsustainable shale gas.
今日はロンドンともファッションともさほど関係ないことを書きます。2012年、私アフリカ初上陸で人生観大きく変わったよという記事です。(旅の内容については端折ります）
Today, I’m going to write something different, not relating to London nor fashion that much. I wanna write about how my trip to Africa in 2012 changed me.( I won’t write about details of the trip.)
アフリカ初上陸なら、ダイヤモンドで経済が安定しているボツワナはいいよと教えてもらい、空路約36時間かけて、福岡→香港→ヨハネスブルグ→ハボローネへと飛びました。私の大学時代の卒論はアフリカ系アメリカ人の女性作家ゾラ・ニールハーストンの作品だったこともあり、彼女たちのルーツであるアフリカはとにかくずーっと憧れの土地でした。香港からヨハネスブルグへ飛ぶ南アフリカ航空の機内で、アフリカの太鼓の音が聞こえてきた時(機内の音楽です）、いよいよ行くんだなと胸が高鳴ったのを今でも覚えています。
I went to Botswana where the country itself has been stable politically because of the diamond trade, so I flew from Fukuoka to Hong Kong to Johannesburg to Gaborone for about 36 hours. I had been wanting to visit Africa for a long time because I wrote about the story of Zora Neal Hurston who is an African American female writer in my thesis, and I had interests in the roots of her culture. I still remember that my heart was beating when I jumped on the SouthAfrican Airways and listened to the sound of African drum beats(it was the music in the airplane).
ボツワナに着いて早々私が目にした世界は、それは私が知っている世界とは全く別の世界でした。車が通れば子ども達は手を振って笑顔をくれるし、ゲームリザーブという名の国全体がサファリパーク？だし、飛行機は国に３機しかないからもちろん何時間も遅れるし、どこまでも道は真っ直ぐ続くし。
The world I saw right after I landed in Botswana was not the one I knew. Children would wave and give me smiles as I drove. The country itself looks like a huge safari park, there were only 3 airplanes in the country and of course they were delayed for many hours and the roads were very straight and long.
アフリカに行くまでは、変な意味で「かっこいい」自分でありたいと常々思っていました。自分の身に付ける物や、普段使う持ち物であったり、飲むお酒であったり、人よりもいい物を知っていたいし、人から「いいね」と言われたいと。だから、お洋服も靴もやたらにたくさん買いました。でも、それはただの頭でっかちな、何かアラレちゃんの栗頭先生みたいなもんだな（若い方はご存知ないかもしれませんね）とボツワナに行って思ったのです。この赤土色の大地や、空全体を真っ赤に染める夕日、キリンや象やチーターの美しさは絶対的で、私はただのこの広い地球の一人だなととても思わされました。
だからヴィヴィアン・ウエストウッドが言っているように、「買うことを減らし、ちゃんと選んで長く使う。量より質。」これは地球環境を守るためにもとても大事なことだと思うのです。
I always wanted to be “Cool” in a bit of a strange snobby way. I wanted to have better clothes, better items,better wine, better knowledge about everything from my friends so that they could click or say “Likes”, so I bought a lot of clothes and shoes. But I felt myself being very stupid during my stay in Botswana because the red clay colour of the earth, the sky coloured by the sunset, giraffes, elephants and cheetahs, their beauties are all absolute and I’m just one small human being on this earth. That’s why I totally agree with what Vivienne Westwood says ” Buy less, choose well. Make it last.Quality, not quantity.” to protect mother earth.

先日撮影にお邪魔したブランドREVERBERATEのファッションショーに行ってきました。（この写真はお友達がうまいこと撮ってくれました。ベンがまるで沢田研二に見えるのは私だけ？）
I went to the fashion show of the label REVERBERATE in East London. （My friend took this photo very well! Ben looks like a Japanese singer and actor Kenji Sawada!)
REVERBERATEのデザイナーさんは、このショーの会場をNational Portrait Galleryのようにしたいんだと撮影の時に仰ってました。そしてショー当日、モデルのメイクと、音楽、そしてショーの雰囲気、どれも素敵で、彼の理想に近いショーができたのではないかと思います。
The designer of REVERBERATE told me he wants to create the catwalk as if it looks like the National Portrait Gallery. And on the day of the fashion show, the makeups of models, musics and the atmosphere, everything was so nice and I though it was quite close to his ideal show.

ショー終了後は、ベンの勇姿を見に来てくれたお友達と談笑です。
After the show, we had a nice chat with our friends who came over to see Ben’s brave figure.
この日も猫のえさを食べようとした誰にでもフレンドリーなジャッキーが、猫に反撃され、仲裁に入った私が猫にやられるという、私的にビビった事件が起きましたが、そもそも村上春樹著書「海辺のカフカ」のナカタさんじゃないんだから、大体私が猫と犬の仲裁になんて入れるわけがないと理解しました。(ナカタさんは猫と話せます。）

Our Jackie tried to get the cat’s food again.She is so friendly to everyone that she entered the cat’s castle under the sink but the cat got angry and got out of the castle in order to take revenge then I got scratched. I was between them to separate them but I am not Nakata who is able to talk with cats from “Kafka on the shore” written by Haruki Murakami, so I understood I can’t be their referee.
I really wish the REVERBERATE label good luck from Japan to the rest of the world!
１日中快晴の日曜日にRichmond Parkに行きました。最近のロンドンは、朝は快晴、お昼からどんどん天気が崩れてグレーになり雨になるパターンなので貴重な１日でした。そしてRichmond Parkはとてつもなく大きいです。9.55㎢だそうです。（ピンと来ない！）Wikiによりますと、NYのセントラルパークの３倍だそうです。（もっとピンと来ない！）
We went to the Richmond Park on the unusually sunny Sunday afternoon. It has been sunny in the morning and getting grey and rain in the afternoon in London recently, so that day was quite precious for everyone, I assume.

リッチモンドパークにいる野生の鹿は、完璧なカモフラージュでした。木までも見事に鹿の角のように見えます。
The deers in the park were perfectly camouflaged. Even the logs look like the horns of the deers.
さて、ここに鹿は何頭いるでしょう？

白鳥が住む池は、きれいな夕焼けの空が反射していました。
You can see the reflection of the beautiful sky of the sunset in the pond where wild swans live.
ベンも木にすっぽり収まるから、美しい公園が身近にいくつもあるから、私はロンドンが大好きです。ロンドンという大都会で暮らしながらも、こんなにたくさんの自然に囲まれて生活していることが、夫ベンの創作に繋がっているのだなと思います。
I love London very much because of these beautiful parks nearby where my husband can fit in the tree. I think Ben has become creative surrounded by nature even though he lives in the big city, London .
BBCラジオで、パンクロック歌手のアダムアントがBen Westwoodのジャケットを着用しています。2012年にアダムの曲がSMAP出演のソフトバンクのCMで使われたそうです。やるな、アダムもベンも！

日本人デザイナーのブランド、REVERBERATEの撮影にお邪魔しました。デザイナーがベンの知人で、撮影を担当した写真家のサイくんと私は、もうすぐ日本で出版されるはずの本のお仕事を一緒にしました。本についてはまた後日書きますね。
I went to the photo shoot of the Japanese label REVERBERATE. Ben knows the designer and I know the photographer who I worked with for a Japanese book which is supposed to be published soon. I will write about the book later.

個人的にはこのジャケットが好きでした。ベストとジャケットのパターンを組み合わせているそうで、縫製がとても難しかったとのこと。彼がつくるアイテムは、どれをとっても非常に生地がよく、丁寧に作られているな〜と、撮影の傍ら非常に感心しておりました。
I like the jacket which John wears personally. The designer told me this jacket is made by using the patterns of a waistcoat and jacket and it was very hard for him to be sewing up. I was so impressed by his items because of the good quality textiles and his craftmanship was very detailed.
ベンもモデルをつとめました。（ジャッキーは撮影現場にあった猫のえさを食べていました。。）デザイナーの描くシナリオにちゃんとあったキャスティングと撮影現場だったように思います。この撮影現場に関しては、また後日記事を書きたいと思います。
Ben was also modeling for the shoot. ( And Jackie ate the location owner’s cat’s food) I think the cast and the place perfectly fit with the scenario of the designer. I want to write about the place later on.

スペインのモハカを出発してグラナダへと向かいました。理由はベンの愛車が今年40歳をむかえるグラナダという車種だからです。
We went to Granada after having stayed in Mojacar. The main reason we visited there was because Ben’s car is the model Granada from Ford and will be 40 years old this year.
モハカから車で通常は２−３時間で着くようですが、スペインの高速道路の標識がなかなか複雑で、午後にはモハカを出発したのに、グラナダに着いたころにはもう日が暮れていました。
It usually takes about a couple of hours to get to Granada from Mojacar but the motorway signs in Spain are very tricky and it was completely dark when we got to Granada although we shot off quite quickly from Mojacar in the afternoon.
グラナダは想像以上に観光地で日本人もたくさん見かけました。町の中心地をバスとタクシー以外は走ることができないのですが、道の狭さと文化財を残すということを考えると納得でした。
Granada is a much more touristic place than I imagined, so I saw many Japanese there. Only narrow tourist buses and taxies are allowed to drive in the old center of the town which I fully understand thinking of the very narrow streets and maintaining historical heritage in a good condition.
グラナダと言えばの、アルハンブラ宮殿に行きました。スペインがイスラム勢力に支配されていた時代に建てられた小高い丘の上に立つ巨大な宮殿です。（１日に入る人数を制限されていますので行かれる場合は事前に予約することをお勧めしますよ。）
We were in Granada and of course visited the Alhambra. This palace was built during the era when Spain was conquered by Islam and is massively huge on the hill top. ( If you visit there I highly recommend you to book ticket in advance because they set the number of visitors per day.)
柱の模様も、床も、壁も、階段も、きれいなイスラミックタイルで装飾され、この王朝がいかに勢力があり、豪華だったかがうかがえます。
Most of the posts, floors, walls and stairs are decorated with beautiful Islamic tiles which made me understand how powerful and gorgeous the dynasty was.
アルハンブラ敷地内の塔からは、雪がかった山々、そして市街地を望むができます。夏にはとても暑くなるグラナダでも涼がとれる場所に建てられたそうですが、一番贅沢ということですね。
You can see mountains covered with snow and town areas from the watch tower. It is very hot in the summer in Granada but this palace was built on this hill top purposefully to get cool air even in the summer which means it was a very luxurious place for everyone here.
タイルの前で写真を撮ってもらったら、何となく山岳地帯に住んでそうな人になりました。

明けましておめでとうございます。今年もどうぞよろしくお願い致します。
クリスマスから年始は、イギリスにいる家族とスペインにいる家族と共に過ごしました。そして今日、福岡にいる父から新年の恒例家族集合写真が送られてきて、ほっこりした気持ちになりました。世界の色んなところに私の家族がいるわけですが、改めて家族っていいなと思う年末年始となりました。
Happy New Year! We spent Christmas with Ben’s family in England and then spent New Year with his family in Spain. My father in Fukuoka sent me a family photo which he usually does on the 1st of January as a personal tradition in our family and I also felt so blessed with my family in Japan. I have my families all over the world and I’m very very happy having them.
ベンの伯父さんを訪ねて南スペインの海岸沿いのモハカという町へと行きました。１月とは思えないほど真っ青な空に毎日ほぼ２０度という気温でした。
We went to a town called Mojacar on the coast of South of Spain to visit Ben’s uncles. It was very a beautiful blue sky almost every day and 20 degrees while we were there.
伯父さんの家の玄関は、ロンドナーの心を忘れない2階建てバスのマットが敷いてありました。
The entrance of Ben’s uncle Martin, has a mat of a double decker bus which shows he never forgets being a Londoner 😉
ここモハカは乾燥地帯なので、「サボテンの町」と名付けたいくらいサボテンをよく見ます。
Mojacar is a very dry area and I saw a lot cactus so I thought to name this town ” Cactus town”.
刈り取られたサボテンは一体どこへ行くのでしょうか。
I was wondering where these cactus go after being chopped out.
今回のスペインの旅では、ベンの伯父さんで写真家のロドニーにベン・ウエストウッドアイテムの写真を撮ってもらいました。モハカから車で１時間ほど行ったところに、西部劇が撮影された場所があります。ベンのアイテムにぴったりでしょう！この乾燥した山岳地帯で、大学の授業で勉強したヘミングウェイの「インディアン・キャンプ」を思い出しました。まさに西部劇な場所ということですね。
Ben’s uncle, Rodney who is a professional photographer took photos of Ben’s clothes in the South of Spain in a place where spaghetti western films were often shot, a 1 hour drive from his place and a perfect location for the Ben Westwood label! These dry mountains reminded me of a short story by Hemingway called ” Indian camp” which I studied at my Uni. On the whole, this was a really western film experience.
夫婦でモデルになったわけですが、ロドニーはほんとに素晴らしい写真家で、いい物をたくさん撮ってくれました。今からこの写真を形にしていくのが楽しみです。またどうなったかはここでお知らせしますね。
We were both modeling. Rodney is a really great photographer and he took a lot of beautiful photos of us which I think will make a really good look book. I will update you later!
