ロンドンに越して来てすぐ、当時住んでいた家の近くで路上を歩く馬とそれに乗った警察官を見て感動したのを覚えています。最近もまた家の近くでよく見かけます。何度見ても迫力がある、感動物なのです！ロンドンで生まれ育った人たちも同じ気持ちのようで、馬が歩いているのを見ては立ち止まって話しかけています。
I was extremely touched looking at police officers riding horses in my neighbourhood where I used to live right after I moved to London. Recently, I’ve seen more in my new area. Every time I see police horses I still feel like “Wow!” because of their dignified presence and even Londoners feel the same way.
この日は、初めて馬用のトラックを見ました。これに乗って馬は運ばれて来るようです。
家の前をパトロール中の警察官に、なぜロンドンの警察は馬に乗ってるのかを質問したところ、伝統であることが大きな理由だけども、例えばサッカーなどで暴動が起きた時に馬は人間よりも大きいので制御しやすいから、また、警察が馬に乗ってたらかっこいいでしょ;)と教えてくれました。
On this day, I saw a police horses’ lorry for the first time, horses seem to be transported by this means.
I asked the officer why the police ride horses on the street, and he told me that it’s an old tradition first of all, then that horses can stop riots because they are bigger than human beings and finally that the officers look cool on horses 😉
数ヶ月前バルカムでフラッキング反対のデモに参加した時に、そこにいた警察が、予算の関係上バルカム地域の警察は馬を所持していないので、こういうデモがある日はロンドン警察から馬を借りていると教えてくれました。
※フラッキングとは、日本語では水圧破水法と呼ばれ、シェールガスを採掘する方法です。フラッキングには大量の水が使われるのですが、その際に地下汚水や人工地震を引き起こすと言われています。
When we went to a demo against anti-fracking in Balcombe, the police officer riding a horse there told me that keeping horses cost a lot so police in Balcombe rent horses from London when they need them.
※Fracking is a way of mining shale gas which often causes water pollution and artificial earthquakes.
11月5日は毎年恒例のベンの友達との花火大会です。ベンが子供の頃から何十年も続けている行事ですが、年々安全などの問題からロンドンで花火をするのが難しくなってきているそうで、今年は私たちの友達アンディーが管理をしているロンドンブリッジの近くのガーデンで開催されました。
We had a Bonfire night on the 5th of November at Andy’s garden in London bridge. Ben has been having this party for decades since he was a child but it seems to have been difficult to find a place to have bonfire in London due to health and safety.
お昼間のガーデンです。

アンディーにきれいに整備されたシャードからも近いこのガーデンは、もともとは娼婦や貧困で亡くなった方々のお墓だったそうで、石に付着した骨がここがお墓だったことを教えてくれます。
みんなで花火や飲み物や食べ物を持ち寄るのですが、総勢40名くらい集まったこの日に、私のおにぎり15個は意味がなかったですね（笑）アンディーの奥さん台湾人のヤシンは巻き寿司とキッシュを作って来ていました。それ以外の人たちはベイクドポテト用のじゃがいもにソーセージです。アジアとヨーロッパの食文化の違いを感じました。
みんなで談笑して飲んで食べて、約5時間くらい気ままに花火を上げ、気ままに解散となりました。

It was a big party about 40 people. Most of them brought fireworks, food or drinks. I made 15 rice balls for the party but they weren’t enough for everyone! Andy’s wife Ya-Hsin from Taiwan made roll sushi and quiche ( She is a very good chef!) and other people brought potato and sausages. I felt the difference of food culture between Asia and Europe.
Anyway, we enjoyed talking, laughing, eating and drinking by the light and heat of the bonfire.
人間がとても楽しんでいる間に、私たちの愛犬ジャッキーは火を恐れて車から出れず、かわいそうにしていました。犬用の耳栓がないものかと思っています。
While human beings were enjoying the bonfire, our lovely dog Jackie was totally paranoid of the fire and we couldn’t let her get out of the car. I want to look for earplugs for her 
地元福岡の名所大濠公園より大きな公園が、自宅の近所にあります。その名もバタシーパークと言いまして、今は落ち葉で地面が覆われ、秋の装いを見せてくれます。
There is a beautiful park in my hometown, Fukuoka, called Ohori park but we have a bigger and also beautiful Battersea Park in my neighbourhood, in London. The ground is covered with a carpet of leaves and you can feel autumn now.
そんな普段から素敵な公園で、11月5日前後の土曜日は毎年花火が上がります。家から花火鑑賞ができる最高の日になります。
11月5日は、「ガイ・フォークスの日」と呼ばれ、16世紀の11月5日に、カトリックの敬虔な信者であったガイ・フォークスがイギリス国教会の弾圧に抵抗するためジェームズ1世の爆殺を目論み、国会議事堂の地下を火薬で埋めたのですが、計画がバレてしまい、逆に捕らえられ拷問され処刑されたという事件があります。この日を自由のために戦った日、また火薬で地下を埋めたことにかけて、今では花火を楽しむようになっています。11月5日近くになると、スーパーや至る所で花火が売られ、ロンドンが日本の夏のような雰囲気になります。
There are fireworks around the 5th of November every year in Battersea Park and we can see it at home. I don’t think I should explain Guy Fawkes for British which I did above in Japanese 😉
この日はバタシーの他10カ所くらいで花火が上がっているのが見えました。右端の方では違う場所での花火が見えます。
There were over 10 fireworks in the air at one time that we could see at home. You can see small fireworks in the right side of this photo.
狭い我が家なので普段は人をお招きできないのですが、今回は友人2名をお招きしました。彼らの頭上のジャケットはベンのリバーシブルのカモフラジャケットです。もうすぐ販売されます！
We usually don’t invite friends to our place because it’s too small for many people apart from small hobbits but this time we invited 2 of our friends. You can see Ben’s 2 reversible camouflage jackets above them, they will be sold at World’s end shop on King’s road soon!
